Anger Counselling
Understanding what sits underneath anger, and building a different response.
Anger is the visible end of something else — hurt, shame, fear, exhaustion or a boundary that has been crossed repeatedly. Managing it well means understanding the trigger and the meaning you attach to it, not just counting to ten.
We work on recognising escalation early, regulating physical arousal, and communicating what you need before it becomes an outburst. Where anger has affected relationships or work, we address repair as part of treatment.
Sessions are non-judgemental. People rarely arrive proud of how they've handled things; that isn't where we start.
What to expect
We map your escalation first: the trigger, the early physical signals, and the interpretation that turns frustration into rage. Pause and regulation strategies are rehearsed until they are available under pressure. Where anger has damaged relationships, repair forms part of treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
We agree the likely number of sessions with you at the first appointment, once we understand what's happening. A Mental Health Care Plan funds up to ten individual sessions per calendar year, and an initial referral commonly covers six before your GP reviews it. We set a review point rather than committing you to an open-ended course. Early gains come from arousal regulation, and the durable change comes from the communication and repair work that follows.
Evidence base

Anger treatment here draws on cognitive behavioural approaches to arousal regulation and on assertive communication training, both established components of the psychological interventions the Australian Psychological Society reviews as evidence based.

Questions about Anger Counselling
Will I be judged for what I have done?
No. People rarely arrive proud of how they have handled things, and that is not where treatment starts. Sessions are non-judgemental and focused on what changes next.
Is this court-mandated anger management?
No. We provide clinical treatment rather than a mandated program, and we do not issue court reports. Tell us at enquiry if a report is required so we can refer you appropriately.
Can my partner attend?
Where anger is affecting a relationship, joint sessions with our systemic psychotherapist can run alongside individual work. We discuss which order makes sense at assessment.
