EMDR therapy in Melbourne

Trauma-focused treatment with a clinical psychologist, in the CBD or by video, at a pace you set.

EMDR is offered at our Melbourne CBD rooms at Level 10, 53 Queen Street, and by secure video Australia-wide. It is a first-line treatment for PTSD in adults under Australia's national guidelines, it is an approved strategy under Medicare's Better Access program, and preparation always comes before any memory processing.

Why people come to us for it

Usually one of three reasons: a single traumatic event that has not settled, a GP or psychiatrist has suggested EMDR specifically, or talking therapy has helped with everything except the memory itself. All three are reasonable starting points.

What we will not do is begin processing in a first session. The early work is history-taking, identifying the memories that still drive symptoms, and making sure you have enough stability to do the processing safely.

Doing it in the city

Trauma work has an afterwards. People often want twenty quiet minutes before going back to a desk, so we schedule EMDR appointments where there is room either side rather than squeezing them into the middle of a busy clinic day — and the quieter Queen Street end of the grid helps.

If you would rather not be in the city at all afterwards, the same work can be done by video from home.

What it costs

EMDR is billed as an ordinary 50-minute session, so the same Medicare rebate applies with a valid plan and referral. It is one of the strategies explicitly approved under the Better Access items, alongside cognitive behavioural therapy and interpersonal therapy.

Getting here

A short walk from Flinders Street Station, with the City Loop stations across the grid. Collins Street trams (11, 12, 48, 109) stop a block north and Flinders Street trams (70, 75) a block south — all inside the Free Tram Zone, so travel within the city is free and you do not touch on.

Common questions

Where can I get EMDR therapy in Melbourne?

We provide EMDR at Level 10, 53 Queen Street in the Melbourne CBD, and by secure video anywhere in Australia.

Is EMDR covered by Medicare?

Yes. EMDR is an approved focussed psychological strategy under Better Access, so the standard rebate applies with a Mental Health Care Plan and referral.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

It depends on whether the trauma is a single incident or repeated, and on what else is happening. We estimate it after the assessment and preparation sessions rather than beforehand.

Can EMDR be done by telehealth?

Yes, with adaptation. Whether it suits you is assessed case by case.
